We are in Gran Canaria for a week, trying but failing to find some spring sun. We travel out to Gran Canaria several times over the winter, I always say I should have been born further south because I love the sun and hate the cold, but this week, even in Gran Canaria we’ve been struggling to find the sun. To be fair it is warm, definitely t-shirt and shorts weather, but not the weather for laying by the pool.
The cloud this afternoon though has given us an excuse to walk down to Cafe Wien, located in the Cita Centre in Playa del Ingles. Cafe Wien is an institution, situated midway between the beach and the Yumbo Centre it gets busy between three and five as people walk off the beach and head back to their hotels. The cakes are amazing, I always find an excuse to go at least once a week, and usually more often. My absolute favourite cake there is a rhubarb cake which contains both custard and meringue as well as rhubarb, but today I had the cherry pie and it was delicious.
I may have to see if Rachel in the Sea Breeze Bakery can try and replicate one or two of the cakes they produce in Cafe Wien. I’m not sure if they would share the recipe, but definitely an excuse to go back and try to see if they will.
